Iran's war spreads to four new countries as Saudi Arabia joins US strikes on Iraq

Saudi Arabia openly bombed Iraqi territory alongside US aircraft for the first time in this war, striking Popular Mobilization Forces sites across seven provinces and killing 20 PMF fighters plus at least four Iranian IRGC advisers, both CENTCOM and the Saudi Defense Ministry confirming a coordinated operation. Within the same 24 hours the IRGC claimed its ballistic strike on Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti base, a US-owned LNG unit burned at Damietta in Egypt, and Kuwait closed its airspace while intercepting hostile aircraft. Brent settled up 7.9% at $90.74.

How large were the Iraq strikes, and who died?

  • Cross-bloc corroborated: strikes from roughly 00:14Z on PMF headquarters and camps in Nineveh, Diyala, Basra, Baghdad, Wasit, Karbala, Kirkuk and Salahuddin. PMF official toll: 20 killed, 32 wounded.
  • Four IRGC advisers were named by Iranian and Axis channels, with a fifth added later; Markazi's deputy governor confirmed one death to IRNA. NYT/CNN cited one US official claiming about 20 Iranian advisers killed; the IRGC called that a rumour. Treat 4 to 5 as the floor.
  • Trump's claim that the strikes were "in coordination with the Iraqi government" is single-source from Trump. Iraq's National Security Council condemned the strikes; PM Ali Falih al-Zaidi cancelled Thursday's Jeddah meeting with MBS (Reuters, Al Jazeera, Iraqi government source).
  • Kata'ib Hezbollah says its response "may reach US tools in Saudi Arabia" but deferred it until after Arbaeen, giving Baghdad until 23 Safar (about 16 August).

Is the US now striking inside Iran again?

  • Axios, citing one US official, reported US strikes underway in Iran from about 21:45Z. CENTCOM had issued no statement as of filing. Only West Azerbaijan's confirmation of one projectile in an uninhabited area and IRIB's Piranshahr report have official Iranian backing.
  • WSJ: CENTCOM's Adm. Brad Cooper has prepared a 10 to 14 day punishing air campaign option against Iran's missile infrastructure; Hegseth reportedly backs it; Trump has not fixed scope.
  • Kuwait's MoD via KUNA confirmed intercepts and airspace closure. The casualty chain (4 to 6 to 12 to 25 killed) came almost entirely from one Axis-adjacent channel with no wire or Kuwaiti confirmation. Hold casualties as UNVERIFIED.
  • Egypt: Ambrey and Inchcape confirmed the US-owned FSRU *Energos Winter* was hit by at least one drone; Egypt's Petroleum Ministry denied an attack, citing an engine-room fire. No claim of responsibility. First Egyptian territory struck.

What constrains Washington?

  • CSIS estimates Patriot PAC-3 stocks at roughly 827 (from 2,330) and THAAD at about 278 (from 452); the Pentagon signed a $58.6bn Lockheed interceptor contract.
  • AP quoted a senior US official: "The administration is not seeking to resume talks with Iran at this time." Tehran formally rejected Oman's Hormuz joint-management proposal (Reuters, Iranian official).
  • Barak Ravid, via a source in the room for Khaled bin Salman's meeting with Vance: MBS wants to halt escalation with Iran, contradicting Netanyahu's framing.

Is Lebanon unravelling?

  • An explosive drone hit an IDF D9 vehicle on Ali Taher ridge; the IDF confirmed it and called it a ceasefire violation. Hezbollah neither confirms nor denies.
  • The IDF is pressing to detonate explosives emplaced three weeks ago in the Ali Taher tunnels, previously withheld at Trump's request. The Rome round remains dated 4 August.

What to watch next (24-72 hours)

  • Whether CENTCOM confirms strikes inside Iran, and whether Trump authorises the Cooper plan.
  • Whether KUNA or wires corroborate a Kuwait City missile impact, or the story collapses.
  • Israel's response to Ali Taher and any contamination of the 4 August Rome round.
  • Damietta: claim of responsibility, Egyptian findings, effects on Suez transits and Sidi Kerir liftings.
  • Announcement, possibly Thursday, of the Saudi-led roughly 50-nation Red Sea escort coalition.
  • Whether al-Zaidi reschedules Jeddah, and whether 85 gathered signatures force an Iraqi emergency session.
