US moves from options to orders on Iran, with a pre-Monday clock

3 min read

Four US outlets (WSJ, CBS, Axios and CNN) converged within a two-hour window tonight on reporting that President Trump has authorized, or is on the verge of authorizing, a multi-day bombing campaign against Iranian energy infrastructure, possibly beginning this weekend and coordinated with Israel. CBS reported planners want strikes concluded before Monday's market open. Iran pre-empted with a Tasnim-sourced threat against Gulf energy and Israeli gas fields, and Fars published a target list.

How solid is the strike decision?

  • WSJ, citing US officials, says Trump has ordered an attack "aimed at forcing Tehran to surrender," lasting several days. CBS says Trump has **not** given final approval; Axios (Ravid) says he is "seriously considering"; CNN says cancellation is still possible and scope is undefined.
  • New York Post (2 sources): CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper has drafted a two-week sustained plan. High-level discussion of cutting power to all of Tehran, no decision.
  • Calibration: genuine multi-source convergence, but all trace to unnamed US officials and reporting is internally inconsistent (ordered vs considering; Israel in vs out). The leak is plausibly itself coercive. Israeli commentators note no unusual home-front alert tonight.

What has Iran threatened?

  • Tasnim, citing a senior security official (single-source, institutionally significant): a "comprehensive plan" against Israeli critical infrastructure and US regional energy infrastructure.
  • Fars target list: Ghawar, Abqaiq, Khurais; Ruwais, Zakum; North Dome, Ras Laffan LNG; Burgan; Sitra, Ma'ameer; and Leviathan and Tamar. Signalling, not an operational claim.

Is Hormuz closed?

  • IRGC Communiqué 57 claims two tankers struck and stopped under alleged US air escort, four turned back; strait "closed." CENTCOM calls this "false," tallying 30 vessels diverted, 2 disabled, 2 boarded, plus ~30 humanitarian transits.
  • MarineTraffic: transits down ~77%, 22 to 5 in 24 hours, all via the Iranian corridor. Kpler: 2 tankers through Hormuz Thursday vs 25 through Bab al-Mandab. QatarEnergy's Al Areesh reversed course.
  • Vessel-strike claims remain Iran-only; no name, flag, owner or insurer confirmation. Brent settled +1.22% at $90.12, WTI +1.29% at $84.67, reversing on the headlines.

What changed in Iraq and the Red Sea?

  • Al-Monitor (single-source): the US removed its last five Patriot batteries from Erbil, leaving the KRG without ABM cover amid a fourth Iranian drone attack this week (Koya, Topzawa; corroborated by Rudaw and Reuters).
  • Bloomberg: six Bahri-owned Saudi crude tankers diverted to the Cape route. Houthi spokesman Saree claimed eight; six is the corroborated floor.

Where do Lebanon and Gaza stand?

  • Lebanon's CNRS recorded 1,038 explosions since 2 March, 435 since the framework agreement. Berri: the framework was "born dead." Hezbollah accused the state of "complicity."
  • Hamas accepts the Board of Peace roadmap in principle; Ghazi Hamad: "storage, not surrender." Channel 13 reports Israeli warnings of "a direct collision course with Washington" over withdrawal sequencing.

What to watch next (24-72 hours)

  • Whether strikes land before Monday's open, and whether they hit refining/power (escalatory) or missile infrastructure (continuity).
  • Israeli Home Front Command alerts, GPS jamming, Ben Gurion tanker surges (7+ observed).
  • Confirmed Iranian strikes on Gulf or Israeli energy nodes; host-state statements, not IRGC communiqués, are the tell.
  • Rome round on 4 Aug: postponement risk, expanded Lebanese delegation.
  • Hormuz throughput data and any named struck vessel; further QatarEnergy reversals.
  • Whether Israel accepts withdrawal-linked staging and the 14-day clock starts.
