Trump Cancels Iran Strike, Tehran Denies Hormuz Deal Exists

4 min read

Trump announced early Sunday (02:00Z) that he had called off a "massive" strike on Iran, claiming an agreed "perimeter of a deal" covering the "immediate, complete and total opening of the Hormuz Strait" and an end to Iran's nuclear threat. Within hours, Iranian military sources and the Foreign Ministry flatly denied both that Tehran requested a halt and that any Hormuz agreement exists. Brent gapped roughly 6-7% lower at the Sunday open. The strait remains closed by Iran's own statement.

Is there actually a Hormuz deal?

  • Trump's Truth Social post was carried verbatim across Israeli, Gulf, Iranian and Western channels (cross-bloc confirmed), including his claim that Iran and other regional states asked for the hold and that "the State of Israel joins me in this commitment."
  • Mehr, Tasnim and IRGC-linked Fars all quoted military sources calling the request claim "a new lie and a desperate attempt to blackmail Gulf rulers." Fars, citing a source close to the nuclear team: "There is no agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz."
  • MFA spokesman Baghaei said on camera the Iran-Oman track concerns a third route, "neither northern nor southern," and is "a necessary but not sufficient condition" for reopening; Hormuz "will not return to its pre-war state."
  • Araghchi told cabinet via IRNA the Iran-Oman talks are "in final stages," the day's most consequential single data point, and Iranian-official rather than leaked.
  • Barak Ravid/Israeli Ch.12 reported Araghchi accepted a Qatari-US model (entry via Iranian waters, exit via Omani). Fars explicitly denied that model; Baghaei's formulation is inconsistent with it. Treat as single-source and partly contradicted; "a route deal is close" is cross-bloc corroborated.

Did the kinetic track stop?

  • UKMTO confirmed a tanker master heard an explosion 20nm NE of Khasab; vessel and crew safe. Axis channels (Sabereen, Rased) claim an IRGC projectile strike after the vessel ran with AIS off: single-bloc, unverified.
  • CENTCOM publicised an F-35C launch from USS Abraham Lincoln and claims 35 commercial vessels diverted, 2 disabled, 2 boarded since the blockade resumed.
  • The War Horse/ABC News report 653 US wounded in the Iran war, including 64 senior officers and 170-plus head injuries; the 1 March Shuaiba Port drone strike was the deadliest event with 6 US dead.

How split is the Gulf?

  • Axios first reported (2 US officials plus one source) MbS urging de-escalation; SPA later officially confirmed the call.
  • Per WSJ (single-source, detailed), Gulf states are frustrated by the absence of US strategy; Saudi/Qatar/Oman favor dialogue while UAE, and per some accounts Bahrain and Kuwait, push Trump to be tougher. An Iranian diplomat told WSJ the IRGC is weighing pre-emptive strikes: single-source and self-serving.

Where is US-Israel friction?

  • Ch.12 reports Netanyahu and Katz learned of the cancellation from Truth Social; CENTCOM gave Israel no answers. A security source told Kan the pattern "harms operational readiness and drains us."
  • Israeli strikes killed ~19 Palestinians (Gaza MoH; cumulative 73,356 dead). US officials told Ch.12: "why continue assassinations now?" Netanyahu's spokesman cited "serious concerns" on Hamas disarmament.
  • Katz told Ch.14: "We destroyed 24 Lebanese villages… They will not return." Ex-minister Sarraf puts it at ~47. Lebanese MoH toll: 4,333 killed since 2 March.

What to watch next (24-72 hours)

  • Whether Monday-afternoon talks convene; Iran has confirmed no venue, format or delegation.
  • Whether a transit mechanism is published, and crucially whether IRGC Navy, not the MFA, endorses permissioning.
  • Any further maritime incident; one confirmed hull strike on a laden Saudi or Qatari cargo unwinds the Brent gap.
  • Rome round 7: start date, technical committees, whether demolitions pause.
  • Gaza phase two: Netanyahu's three reservations (weapons storage, Qatari/Turkish verification, IDF movement).
  • Arbaeen (13 Mordad): mass gatherings as both target window and stated Iranian restraint rationale.
