**Trump's claim that U.S.-Iran talks begin Monday collapsed under a three-way denial on Sunday, as Iran's foreign ministry, Pakistani mediators and U.S. officials speaking to CBS News all said no new negotiating round is scheduled.** By late evening the kinetic track reasserted itself: reported drone impacts near U.S. positions in northern Kuwait and a fresh UKMTO report of a cargo vessel struck 20nm northeast of Khasab. Markets priced a ceasefire that does not exist as a formal instrument.
What is actually being negotiated?
- Iranian spokesman Baghaei, on the record: "We have no negotiations with America right now. The negotiations are with Oman," aimed at a temporary "middle route" through Hormuz that he called "a necessary but not sufficient condition" to reopen the strait. Maps have been exchanged over 7-8 days.
- Baghaei named Pakistan as mediator with Qatari assistance, said China is not a mediator, and ruled out hosting or sending a delegation "in these days."
- CBS, citing U.S. officials: "no new talks planned," only Witkoff/Kushner contact through intermediaries. A senior Pakistani official told Anadolu no date or venue is fixed.
- Trump escalated regardless: "this is their last chance," "Phase 1 is the Strait open literally by tomorrow, Phase 2 is denuclearization," "nothing gets through to Iran unless a deal or total surrender," and "one last chance before we cut their heads off." He separately instructed oil majors, naming Chevron's Wirth, to cut prices "NOW."
How hard is the blockade biting?
- CENTCOM's own updated tally: 44 commercial vessels diverted, 2 disabled, 2 boarded since the blockade resumed, up from 35/2/2. It says it has assisted over 1,000 vessels since early May.
- Kpler: 7 Hormuz transits used the Iranian-designated route; zero used the traffic separation scheme. CNN, citing Marisecs, put 3-5 mb/d still exiting near Oman versus a roughly 20 mb/d pre-conflict baseline.
- UKMTO confirmed Sunday's Khasab-area impact; attribution to an IRGC Navy cruise missile is Axis-sourced only. IRGC's claimed MQ-9 shootdown is single-bloc, unverified, no debris imagery.
- The northern Kuwait explosions near the Doha military area are contested: no Kuwaiti or U.S. statement, and pre-announced Kuwaiti live-fire drills for 4-5 Aug are a plausible confound.
- Brent settled minus 4.73% at $83.77; WTI minus 5.11% at $80.34 (Reuters, cross-confirmed).
- Against that: U.S. SPR fell to roughly 304.8-308 mb, lowest since February 1983 (DOE via Reuters); EU storage at 57.1%, a record low for the date; Iraq paying a $25-29/bbl premium to lift from Basra (Bloomberg).
- Windward and Reuters cross-corroborated six named Saudi-flagged VLCCs rerouting via the Cape, one voyage lengthening from 24 to 56 days, while 22 China-linked vessels transited Bab al-Mandab unharmed: differential access by flag, not blanket closure.
- Rome round 7 convenes Monday; Al-Liwaa (single-source) says Lebanese negotiator Simon Karam will condition talks on further IDF withdrawals at Bint Jbeil, Khiam and Nabatieh. Israel's Channel 12 satellite analysis: about 18,000 buildings destroyed across 19 villages, 74% of stock.
- Per Axios and i24, Mladenov and Lightstone asked Netanyahu for a 14-day halt to strikes; his office refused to withdraw from the current line. Hamas awaits "a clear, official answer."
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
- Official Kuwaiti or CENTCOM confirmation or denial of a strike on the Doha military area.
- Whether Rome produces a written verification mechanism and a named second pilot zone, and whether Ali al-Taher sits inside it.
- Whether transit data show any step-change by Monday evening, and whether any vessel uses the traffic separation scheme (today: zero).
- A joint Iran-Oman announcement of a temporary corridor, the single most tradeable de-escalation event.
- Whether Smotrich, Strock and Ben Gvir force a Cabinet re-vote on the ISF decision.
- A fourth Khasab-area vessel strike, which would test the minus 5% settle.
