Trump halts Houthi strike package as Bessent moves to ground Iran's airlines
||3 min read
Trump ordered Pentagon strike preparations against the Houthis after a personal appeal from MBS, with Hegseth approving targets Saturday and munitions loaded, then called it off Sunday, according to cross-bloc reporting from NYT, Axios, Bloomberg and Israeli Kan/N12. In its place came economic strangulation: Treasury Secretary Bessent announced that from 23 September all Iranian airlines will be shut out of global operations. Two UKMTO-confirmed tanker incidents hit Hormuz, yet Brent fell 3.4%.
Why was the Houthi strike aborted?
Kan reports (single-source) the trigger was a warning that the Houthis would close Bab al-Mandeb; most of Trump's inner circle opposed a second front. Targets remain approved.
Reuters: Trump spoke by phone with PLC president Rashad al-Alimi, who requested US military support; no commitment given.
Britain is now materially in: the UK approved a Saudi request for "defensive" aerial refuelling, one RAF Voyager at Akrotiri (BBC/Reuters, cross-bloc), the first direct Western combat-support step of this phase.
Strike-tempo counts are irreconcilable: Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree claims 157 Saudi strikes in 24h (cumulative 917); MenchOsint cited 28/24h on a declining trend; al-Houthi's speech used "760+". All Houthi-derived. Sanaa's health ministry reports 6 killed at Al-Mokha and 5 from one family at Al-Batin.
What happened at Hormuz?
UKMTO confirmed two incidents (cross-bloc): a tanker struck by an "unknown projectile," two crew lightly injured; an LPG tanker struck by debris. UKMTO did not attribute to Iran; Middle_East_Spectator did.
IRGC claims it downed a US MQ-1/Gray Eagle (Tasnim, footage released), single-source with no US confirmation; a counter-claim says it was an ADM-160 MALD decoy. Second shaky identification in two days.
Reuters via Al Arabiya: 12 cargo ships over the weekend vs 35 prior (a parallel 17 vs 37 also circulated); CENTCOM claims 110 vessels rerouted since 21 Sept. Iran cleared a second Qatari LNG cargo for Pakistan.
Why did oil fall while freight exploded?
Brent settled -3.4% at $100.34, WTI -4.5% at $95.78 (Reuters), on US-Iran diplomacy hopes and Aramco's ~14m bbl loaded onto 7 VLCCs on 20 Sept (cross-bloc).
VLCC Gulf-Asia hit a record $1.03-1.1m/day, ~12x normal; freight per barrel rose from ~$2 to $22+. Bloomberg: Mideast diesel supply down ~770k bpd; Reuters: Europe faces a ~510k bpd Q4 jet fuel shortfall.
Where are the talks?
No MoU movement. Qatar's Majed Al-Ansari said Doha seeks even a short-term deal, requiring Hormuz reopening and a no-force assurance, citing "significant mistrust" (single-source presser).
Araghchi is in New York; Pezeshkian travels 22 Sept without a press team due to visa denials (AFP). No Trump-Pezeshkian meeting confirmed.
WSJ reports a proposed $5bn US/$5bn Gulf "PACT" fund; Kan/N12 says Trump offered to split a $10bn bypass pipeline and Gulf states refused. Both single-source, compatible, both note Gulf scepticism.
What else moved?
Lebanon: ~53 Israeli strikes in 24h (vs 29), phosphorus reported at Wadi al-Saluqi; Waltz called UNIFIL's mandate "failed."
Iraq: PM al-Zaidi (NYT) proposed a 90-day window and weapons handover by 30 June 2027, blaming Iran for blocking Iraqi tankers.
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
23 Sept: whether Iraq, Turkey, Gulf handlers and Chinese providers comply with the airline shutdown; Xi arrives in Washington 23-25.
Pezeshkian's 22 Sept UNGA arrival and any movement on Qatar's two preconditions.
