Three tankers struck near Hormuz as US-Iran talks approach deadlock
||4 min read
Three tankers were reported struck in or near the Strait of Hormuz on 2 Oct, and MarineTraffic data showed transits almost halted for much of the day. A Western security official told the NYT Iran has averaged roughly 30 drone and 10 anti-ship missile attacks a week since early August. With Axios reporting talks "approaching another deadlock," the trajectory points toward renewed US-Iran hostilities, most likely after the 3 Nov midterms.
What hit shipping?
Ambrey reported a Panama-flagged inbound tanker hit by a projectile and smoking. UKMTO reported an outbound tanker with a small fire and power loss (crew safe, no pollution), plus a crude carrier struck 4nm east of Oman (~23:17Z). No vessel is identified.
At least 8 vessels were hit in 5 days, by one open-source count. UK naval sources, via Nournews, put the total at 13+ tankers since 10 Sept.
The IRGC claims "full control" of the strait and Trump claims "near-total control." Neither fits MarineTraffic's near-zero traffic.
What is Tehran legislating?
A Hormuz Security bill would bar Israeli, "hostile-state" and military-cargo ships and require General Staff permits for all others, according to committee spokesman Qashqavi (Iranian state media, single-source). It still needs a floor vote and Guardian Council review.
Pakistan's FM Dar said "there should be no fees for passage," a public split with an Islamabad MoU mediator.
How is the US posturing?
Axios and other outlets report two more Patriot batteries were sent to Saudi Arabia and Qatar (cross-bloc).
WaPo and FT, relayed by Iranian outlets, report 7 more warships carrying 9,000+ troops. FT says Trump is weighing an "apocalyptic" post-midterm option.
The Pentagon awarded a $24.4bn SM-6 contract. CSIS estimates 190 to 370 SM-6s were expended from a pre-war stock of 1,160.
Where do talks stand?
No US reply to Iran's 7-day-plan response has surfaced. Axios says US officials fear fighting "within weeks."
Three senior Iranian officials told Reuters Tehran is preparing wider retaliation, possibly outside the region. Iran has asked allies in Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq to stand ready (single-bloc).
Putin claims Iran, the US and Israel initially accepted moving uranium to Russia until Washington demanded it go to the US (his account, uncorroborated).
What is happening to oil?
Macron announced a G7 deal to release up to 100m bbl over 4 months via the IEA (cross-bloc). EU diplomats call it a "fake" restatement of an undelivered March 400m-bbl pledge.
Brent is quoted near $102 (single-source, no settlement figure), and UK diesel hit a record £2/l. Trump says there will be no US diesel export ban.
Reuters reports 19 LNG cargoes transited in September, the wartime high, a trend now at risk. Kuwait output fell ~200k bpd to 1.77m bpd.
How wide is the Red Sea front?
6 to 8 drones or missiles hit the coalition HQ in Aden (occurrence cross-bloc). A pro-Houthi claim of "dozens" of Saudi casualties is uncorroborated.
Yanbu's export terminal was reportedly hit on 1 Oct and loading suspended, according to a tanker captain. The hit is unacknowledged by Riyadh and probable but unconfirmed; it would be the first strike on the bypass route behind the "~40% via non-Hormuz" assumption.
Reuters says Riyadh is preparing to retake Bab al-Mandeb with 100k+ Yemeni troops. Axios says it could come in "coming days," with CENTCOM holding "serious reservations."
What else moved?
AP quotes a US official saying there is "currently no evidence" of an Iran link to FlyDubai or Fairford, undercutting Trump's "yes." The UAE designated FlyDubai a "terrorist act" (cross-bloc).
UK police charged two Iranian nationals over a plot targeting Manchester's Jewish community (cross-bloc).
The rial weakened to ~261 to 265k toman per USD; the central bank pledged intervention.
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
The US response to the 2 Oct tanker hits, and any Majlis floor vote on the Hormuz bill.
OPEC+ on 4 Oct and Brent's reaction, especially if Yanbu is confirmed.
Launch of the Saudi/PLC offensive toward Taizz and Bab al-Mandeb.
Israel's Sunday security cabinet, and whether Israel names a FlyDubai sponsor despite AP's "no evidence" line.
Any Qatar-channel signal on the 7-day plan; a collapse shifts focus to the post-3 Nov window.
