Aramco's Riyadh refinery burns 12-plus hours as Houthis claim strike
||4 min read
A fire at Aramco's Riyadh refinery burned for more than 12 hours on 3 Oct, according to Reuters, making the Saudi-Houthi war the region's most active front. The Houthis claim they caused it; Saudi Arabia has not acknowledged a strike. Saudi jets pounded Sanaa and Saada as Houthi forces pushed toward Taizz's last supply road. In Washington, Axios reports Trump's national security principals met secretly at Camp David on resuming the Iran war.
What hit the Riyadh refinery?
The Houthis claimed an overnight ballistic-missile strike, then a second "qualitative operation" at ~18:50Z. Reuters reports crews struggling to contain the fire, with no Saudi or Aramco confirmation.
NASA FIRMS and Sentinel-2 imagery show tank fires; open-source analysis counts three tanks destroyed and a ~205 MW thermal signature by 19:10Z. The fire is well supported; the cause is plausible but unconfirmed, and a coalition denial is relayed only second-hand.
Houthi- and Axis-aligned sources claim a Yanbu fire (~51 MW), explosions at Abqaiq, Abha and Jizan, Dammam airport disruption and Jazan school closures; all are unconfirmed. Fars counts 18 Riyadh airport stoppages since 29 Sept.
How is Riyadh responding?
Cross-bloc reporting (Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera, Axis outlets) confirms raids on Sanaa, Saada (a police station; 2 injured) and communications sites. The Houthi Health Ministry, with photos, reports damage to Al-Sabeen maternity hospital, and counts 72 killed and 125 wounded since the escalation began.
Spokesman Saree claimed 60 raids in 24h (1,410 cumulative). Houthi official Hizam al-Asad vowed "capital for capital."
Axios: a Saudi-government Bab al-Mandeb counteroffensive is planned within "coming days." The US declined direct involvement but may reconsider airstrikes if it stalls, and has supplied 200+ Houthi targets in two weeks.
Reuters, via Fars: Pakistan's 30,000 to 40,000 troops in the kingdom are for land-border defence, not Yemen operations, correcting prior "air defence" framing.
Who holds Taizz?
Contested. Houthi gains reported at Jabal Han, overlooking the last road into Taizz, and south of At-Turbah. The Houthis claim ~255 sq km in 24h and issued a 48-hour ultimatum.
The PLC claims it retook three positions and "neutralised" 700 fighters, consistent with its inflated tallies. Movement favours the Houthis; 19 humanitarian crossings are closed, according to the Houthi-appointed acting governor.
Is Washington moving toward an Iran strike?
Axios: Vance chaired a 2 Oct Camp David meeting with Rubio, Hegseth, Witkoff, Ratcliffe and Gen. Caine; an official said things were "most likely decided, or at least deeply discussed." Single-origin: regional repetition is an echo, not corroboration.
Trump: the war ends "one way or another, possibly right after the midterms." Hegseth's claim that more oil transits Hormuz than before the war is contradicted by Steve Hanke's count: 2 transits on 30 Sept vs 56 a year earlier.
The carrier count is unresolved: Axios puts US troops above 20k; ISNA (single-source) says the Eisenhower is returning to Norfolk after a 28 Sept incident. Hegseth declined to clarify.
What is happening in Hormuz and diplomacy?
Iranian outlets claim strikes on tankers "Ever Vict"/"Ore Vinst" and "Athinagoras"; identities are unconfirmed. Tallies overlap: ≥8 vessels in 5 days vs ≥20 in a month (Fars, citing a Washington Institute map).
France has a draft UNSC Hormuz resolution. Axios says 2 Iranian UN officials were expelled; Iran's MFA says they "left as scheduled."
Rezaei called talks "very serious" (Al Jazeera). No US reply to Iran's response is reported.
What else moved?
Markets: IEA chief Birol confirmed the G7's 100m-bbl release; no Brent settlement print yet. Iran International, citing Kpler, puts Iranian exports at ~80k bpd, not Bessent's "zero."
Iran: the rial hit a record ~266,000 to 271,000 toman/USD despite a $2bn central bank intervention.
FlyDubai FZ1073: the UAE attorney general confirmed an "attempted terrorist act." CNN-reported jihadist imagery points away from Iranian sponsorship (inference; sponsor still open).
UK plots: US/UK officials believe the Fairford plot was IRGC-linked, but this is unproven.
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
Saudi acknowledgment of refinery damage; OPEC+ and market reaction.
Launch of the Bab al-Mandeb offensive and any US airstrikes.
Expiry of the Taizz ultimatum (~5 Oct) and control of the Jabal Han roads.
Camp David follow-through: a US strike, a reply to Tehran, or carrier clarity.
Whether the rial holds below ~270,000; the ~7 Oct subsidy increase; the Majlis Hormuz vote.
