Houthis seize At-Turbah as US refuses Saudi request for airstrikes
||4 min read
Ansarallah forces captured At-Turbah, the main node on the Taiz-Aden road, on 4 Oct. The Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) effectively conceded, saying it withdrew "to spare civilians." Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman then asked Hegseth for US strikes on the Houthis and was refused, reportedly for the second time in recent weeks, according to Axios. Washington is holding its forces for Iran, not Yemen.
What happened around Taiz?
By about 14:45Z, Ansarallah held government buildings and most districts, cross-bloc reported including by AFP. Earlier cross-bloc gains include Safiya junction, al-Samsarah, Souq al-Markaz and parliament speaker Sultan al-Barakani's home (visual evidence).
A "Taiz besieged" claim is contested. Ansarallah's Hizam al-Asad says the road was "secured, not cut" and calls the city "de facto liberated." Iranian state media (IRIB, Tasnim) declared "Taiz province liberated," more than Sanaa claims; later gains remain unconfirmed.
AFP, citing both sides, reports more than 70 killed in 24h, the only cross-bloc figure. The government claims 97 strikes and 260 "neutralised" (single-source).
How are Riyadh and Washington responding?
Al-Alimi announced operations "to recapture all remaining territory." Coalition spokesman al-Malki pledged "full operational support" and accused the Houthis of targeting Mecca, Medina, Riyadh, Jizan, Najran, Taif and Yanbu. An Aden mobilisation rally is set for 14 Oct.
Axios (single-origin) reports CENTCOM objects to diversion from Iran. Politico cites Iran war fatigue, munitions shortages and growing Houthi capability.
Saree claims 106 Saudi raids in 24h (1,516 cumulative) and SAMs driving off two F-15 formations; the SAM claim rests on pro-Sanaa sources only.
Was Saudi oil infrastructure hit?
Saree claims strikes on Aramco Riyadh and Khurais. A VIIRS heat signature at Khurais pumping station #2 supports some fire; Fars claims a ~50km plume (interested source).
There is no Saudi confirmation for Khurais or yesterday's Riyadh refinery fire. Brent rose about $1 to ~$102 to $103 on Iranian/Axis relays only, with no Western print; treat as indicative.
Where do Hormuz and the talks stand?
UKMTO says an unknown projectile hit an unidentified tanker in the Strait, damaging its engine room; crew safe (cross-bloc). Asharq al-Awsat's "warship or carrier" claim is likely a conflation and unsupported.
Baghaei (cross-bloc): the Qatar-carried plan reopens Hormuz within 7 days if the US accepts seven Islamabad-MoU conditions. He called the US counter "similar to previous," nuclear-centred, and said Iran stays in the NPT "for now." Officials disagree on whether the US reply is "comments" under review or ongoing negotiation.
IRGC adviser Fadavi claims no US naval vessel in the Gulf "for the first time ever"; Energy Secretary Wright (CBS) says flows "continued to rise." Bloomberg puts Gulf-China supertanker rates at ~$1.3m/day, against ~$50k pre-war.
What is US force posture?
All 12 B-1Bs left RAF Fairford with "unusual speed" over an alleged Iran-linked plot (Axios, WSJ, NYT). The Pentagon confirms the move, not the reason; attribution remains officially unestablished.
USS George H.W. Bush is in Phuket (Reuters), out of theatre. Theodore Roosevelt is reportedly due in November, leaving George Washington as the only CENTCOM carrier.
What else moved?
Iran's oil minister Paknejad resigned; NIOC head Hamid Bovard is acting (cross-bloc), with no evidence yet of a policy shift. The rial hit a new low of ~270k toman/USD.
Channels 12 and 13 report the FlyDubai co-pilot confessed to targeting Ben Gurion's terminal; NYT says investigators see no Iran link.
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
Whether the PLC holds Taiz and its mountain passes as the Houthi 48h ultimatum expires.
Whether Alimi's counter-offensive or a Saudi Bab al-Mandeb push moves without US air cover.
Saudi confirmation of damage at Khurais or Riyadh, and a verifiable Brent print.
Iran's formal reply via Doha and any concrete Qatari bridging text.
Identification of the 4 Oct tanker and clarity on Qeshm evening events.
Tehran's permanent oil minister pick; Defence and Intelligence nominees due by 22 Oct.
