Yemen's PLC launches Sanaa offensive as Mecca pact activates collective defence
||4 min read
Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) chief Rashad al-Alimi declared "Operation Dawn of Yemen" to retake Sanaa, formally ending the 2022 truce, as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan activated collective defence under the "Mecca Agreement." The offensive's headline gains at Bab al-Mandab, Dhubab and Mocha appear reversed by nightfall. Houthi missiles closed Riyadh's airport twice, a 13th tanker strike in a week was reported in Hormuz, and Iran still has not answered Washington.
Did the PLC offensive hold ground?
Alimi's announcement is cross-bloc confirmed. Saudi-aligned, single-source coalition claims cite 100 jets at dawn and 324 "high-value targets" destroyed.
The PLC and Giants Brigades claimed Dhubab town and airfield, Bab al-Mandab's "Murad" point, al-Omari camp and Mocha. OSINT geolocated PLC forces at Murad and inside Dhubab airport but judged the airport untenable while al-Omari stayed Houthi-held.
By evening, OSINT reported a "tactical withdrawal" under shelling from al-Omari heights, Ansarallah retaking Murad and the PLC back at its Ras al-Arah start line. Footage shows Houthi-side officials in central Mocha.
Assessment: "Mocha captured" is very likely false; Bab al-Mandab is contested, with evidence favouring the Houthis. An Ansarallah-aligned, single-source "100+ PLC killed or wounded" claim is widely repeated.
In Taiz, partisan claims conflict: the PLC says it retook al-Hujariyah except al-Salw, while a senior Ansarallah official told Fars the city is "practically liberated." Unauthenticated, widely shared video appears to show Giants Brigades vehicles running over captured fighters near Dhubab.
How hard were Saudi targets hit?
AFP and residents confirmed Riyadh explosions at ~16:50Z and ~20:40Z; King Khalid runways closed, ~10 aircraft diverted, reopening near 23:55Z.
A ~60km NASA FIRMS plume supports the Houthi Rabigh refinery fire claim. Khurais is contested: AFP/Reuters-sourced reports say the East-West pipeline halted again, while Bloomberg's sources say flows were uninterrupted.
A Saudi FM/MoD statement acknowledged for the first time that Riyadh, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jizan, Najran, Taif, Yanbu and Red Sea shipping were targeted, not the effects. Houthis declared all Saudi airspace except Mecca and Medina "unsafe."
An unnamed US official (NYT/Al Jazeera) says ~200 US advisers in Saudi command centres assist targeting, plus refuelling, while the US has no Yemen objectives.
What did the Mecca pact commit to?
Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani foreign and defence ministers and chiefs of staff met in Riyadh (cross-bloc), agreeing "immediate implementation" of collective defence and "rapid deployment" of forces to the Kingdom.
The statement never mentions Yemen and Turkish FM Fidan stressed dialogue: read it as deterrent signalling until forces move. Iran's Baghaei said states hosting "aggressors" "must be held accountable."
Is Hormuz deteriorating?
A tanker struck 5 Oct (engine-room fire, no casualties) is described as the 12th or 13th southern-corridor hit in seven days; counts vary. UKMTO reports an IRGC turn-back 11nm north of Khasab (cross-bloc).
Fars says ships need IRGC Navy permission for the southern lane or "will be targeted or hit mines," the clearest Iranian-state link yet to the strikes.
Reuters puts flows at ~80% of pre-war. Brent settled down 1.89% at $100.32 (single-source, unchecked against a primary feed); Aramco's Nasser calls stocks "scarily thin" (cross-bloc).
Where does diplomacy stand?
No Iranian reply yet. Guterres is in Pakistan from 6 Oct with Iran-US mediation on the agenda (IRNA).
Barak Ravid of Axios reported Rubio confirmed a Camp David meeting on Iran and Yemen "next steps"; outcome unknown.
Presidential official Abbas Mousavi says Hormuz stays shut until seven conditions are met; Trump says the war "will end very quickly one way or another."
What else shifted?
Barak Ravid of Axios reported 12 B-1Bs left Fairford over a possible Iranian drone threat; Trump confirmed "we moved them around," contradicting Rubio's "regular rotation."
A US Navy MH-60 squawked 7700 near Yanbu and lost radar contact (cross-bloc flight-tracking); the cause is unknown, and a Houthi SAM claim is single-source.
Israel Hayom reports IDF planning for a possible Iran operation "with or without" the US.
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
Independent geolocation of Dhubab, al-Omari and Taiz encirclement claims.
Visible Pakistani or Turkish deployments into Saudi Arabia.
The AFP-versus-Bloomberg pipeline split, Rabigh damage and Brent around $100.
UKMTO/JMIC reflection of the IRGC permission rule; strike tempo of ~2 per day.
Iran's reply via Doha or Islamabad, a Camp David readout and the UK's 8 Oct consulate deadline.
