The IRGC Navy says it struck the Vietnam-flagged LPG carrier NV Sunshine south of Hormuz and declared that ships on "unauthorised routes" will be pursued anywhere in the region. This is the first explicit widening of its maritime campaign, and it targets the bypass routes Washington cites as proof that flows are recovering. In parallel, the Yemen-Saudi war escalated: 3 people were killed at Riyadh's King Khalid airport, and UN envoy Grundberg called it "full-scale war."
What happened at sea?
In statement no. 18, carried by Fars, Tasnim and IRNA (partly cross-bloc), the IRGC reports a major engine-room fire aboard NV Sunshine. It accuses the US military of "bribing" shippers and insurers onto unauthorised lanes and warns that action "will no longer be confined to Hormuz."
UKMTO separately reported a vessel hit by an "unidentified projectile" 13nm west of Al Jazirah/Ras Al Khaimah; the fire was later extinguished. Open-source geolocation treats this as a distinct incident, while other reports place it "near Fujairah," on the opposite coast. Whether this is one incident or two is unresolved.
A relayed UKMTO 48h rundown (underlying bulletin not seen directly) lists three further incidents. A tanker near Qatar was hit by 3 IRGC naval drones (1 injured) and continued its voyage; an explosion occurred 100m from a tanker in Bab al-Mandeb; and one vessel abandoned its voyage after an IRGC diversion order.
What is Washington claiming?
These claims are single-bloc and unreconciled with Kpler's 7-ship count earlier this week. CENTCOM says it has diverted 133 vessels since the blockade resumed, and a Treasury deputy under-secretary told Al Jazeera that crude through Hormuz is "near pre-war levels." Trump claimed 28m bbl crossed "yesterday, highest ever," up from his 22m figure earlier in the week.
Bessent (on record, cross-outlet) is pursuing "total isolation": ~$1bn of Iran-linked crypto is to be seized by week's end, UAE and Oman are "cooperating," and talks are under way with Pakistan and Turkey on closing Iran's land crossings. Treasury puts total designations at more than 1,500.
Barak Ravid of Axios reiterated his Zamir "within three weeks" reporting; recirculated NYT strike-plan reporting is not new. Bloomberg reports Western officials assess Iran retains significant missile-production capacity, with Russia reportedly still supplying missiles. The State Department urged US citizens to leave Iran.
Sen. Murphy told the Guardian that Hegseth blocked his Al Udeid visit. He also claimed, unconfirmed, that US Embassy Riyadh is "uninhabitable" after a drone strike. A Reuters poll found ~60% disapprove of Trump's handling of Iran.
Where do talks stand?
Pezeshkian (cross-bloc) says new proposals are being finalised "before a meeting via intermediaries," contingent on no "pressure and threats." Araghchi says Iran's reply to the US will come "within days."
Kremlin aide Ushakov says Putin told Trump a deal is "possible and necessary"; the US readout did not echo this. Peskov says Pezeshkian carried no message for Trump.
MP Boroujerdi says Iran won't halt enrichment, rebutting Vance and keeping the gap with Araghchi's track visible. Trump says the war "will end soon one way or another."
How are markets moving?
No new settlement prices are available; the last close was Brent $104.28 / WTI $91.49 (8 Oct). US diesel stands at $6.28/gal, up 71% since the war began, according to Nournews citing market data.
The Trump-Putin diesel deal is now codified (cross-bloc), with an OFAC licence through 7 Apr 2027. Reuters-based analysis puts the initial 300k t at ~74k bpd, small against the shortfall. Zelensky told Barak Ravid of Axios the deal is "Alaska No. 2."
How far has the Saudi-Houthi war escalated?
Saudi aviation authorities confirm 3 Saudi nationals killed in two attacks on KKIA on 8 Oct (cross-bloc). EASA now advises against all travel to or via Saudi Arabia.
In a statement, the Houthis said humanitarian flights to and from Riyadh now require Sanaa clearance and told oil-facility workers to evacuate.
Control of Bab al-Mandeb and Mayun/Perim is contested and unverified. In Taiz, a PLC-aligned field correspondent reported by 22:06Z that all of Jabal Habashi had fallen, threatening Najd Qasim and al-Misrakh.
Fire damage at Petro Rabigh is satellite-corroborated; claims of damage at Shedgum, the Jeddah refinery and Abqaiq remain unconfirmed.
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
Iran's reply to the US, any mediator meeting, and whether Washington echoes Ushakov's line.
A first IRGC strike outside the Gulf under statement no. 18, and the war-risk insurance reaction.
Bessent's ~$1bn crypto seizure and any Pakistani or Turkish move on land crossings.
Whether airlines or the UN accept the Sanaa clearance demand; further strikes on KKIA or Aramco.
Houthi encirclement of Najd Qasim/al-Misrakh; independent verification of control at Bab al-Mandeb.
