Hormuz turns kinetic again as US weighs strikes after midterms
The Strait of Hormuz turned kinetic again on 1 Nov. UKMTO logged a vessel hit by an "unidentified projectile," and the IRGC Navy claimed two "violating" tankers, one a supertanker, hit mines. Trump told Netanyahu he prefers letting the Doha track play out. But a US official reportedly warned Gulf states that fighting could resume "as early as Wednesday," and talks remain stuck on who moves first.

What happened in Hormuz?
At 18:11Z, UKMTO relayed a captain's report of a vessel hit by an "unidentified projectile," carried by both Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera. At ~20:00Z, the IRGC Navy claimed two tankers "exploded" on mines while on an "unauthorised route" with transponders off and "US military support," and said one was a burning supertanker.
Unconfirmed: vessel names, owners and flags. No second bloc confirms mines, and satellite imagery of a surface fire is unsourced.
Nakilat confirms the Qatari LNG carrier Al Mayeda was struck by "unidentified objects" on 30 Oct, ~74 km south of Lavan Island, with no injuries or spill (cross-bloc). Qatar "reserves the right" to act; no state has attributed the attack.
Fars and Mehr say a US strike on 30 Oct killed Capt. Nasser Ebrahiminejadan; Ynet reported it separately, and the US has not commented. Bahrain's FM says ~1,600 ships and 23,000+ sailors are stranded (single).
Is Washington preparing to strike?
The Washington Post reported a US official told Gulf states to prepare for fighting "as early as Wednesday" (4 Nov). This is single origin, with no confirmation elsewhere.
Sentinel-2 imagery from 31 Oct shows 25+ US tankers at Ramon airbase. Channel 13, citing INSS, counts 2 carriers, 14 warships and a possible third carrier, but no F-22s or bombers.
Trump named "Pickaxe Mountain" (Kuh-e Kolang) as one of "one or two sites" left. The Atlantic reports he is questioning Hegseth and Gen. Caine; no order has been issued.
Where do US-Israel ties stand?
Barak Ravid of Axios reported that in a "direct and harsh" call, Netanyahu pressed for strikes right after the 3 Nov midterms. Trump wants diplomacy without Israeli interference, though this "could change significantly" if talks fail.
i24NEWS says close Netanyahu aides were excluded from the call (single). KAN says Israel consulted Abraham Accords Gulf states.
Are the Doha talks moving?
Reuters reports a third consecutive day with Qatari mediators. Araghchi says his deputy returned Sunday and no US meeting is planned.
A diplomat told Ravid talks "progressed positively," calling negative accounts "false." A Channel 14 source says Iran "hasn't moved an inch" (single). Assessment: contested.
Araghchi described a 7-day plan (Hormuz reopens day 6, US talks day 7); Qatar proposed five days or fewer. Earlier reports of a "two-day plan" are unresolved.
Araghchi says any nuclear deal is separate; Deputy Speaker Nikzad calls the window "closed." UAE adviser Gargash calls pre-28 Feb Hormuz traffic "non-negotiable."
How is Iran signalling deterrence?
Multiple officials repeat the "no geographic limitation" line. Akraminia confirmed to Al Jazeera that Iran bought Su-35s. Mohebi's F-35 shootdown claim is uncorroborated.
Iran designated the Royal Navy and RAF "terrorist organisations" (cross-bloc).
What are markets signalling?
No Western Brent print; the last confirmed figure is $115.32 (28 Oct). Tadawul fell 0.8% (Reuters). OPEC+ quota news comes from Iranian state media only.
What else moved?
Yemen: Saree reports 75 Saudi strikes in 24h. Control of the Lahj/Maqatirah front cannot be determined.
Lebanon: Maariv/N12 report plans to occupy Tyre, Sidon and Nabatieh if Hezbollah joins (Israeli media only, reads as a deterrent leak).
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
Whether the "Wednesday" window holds: Ch13's reported 96h/4h warning sequence, bombers, a third carrier.
Whether Iran's delegation returns and the US answers the seven conditions.
Whether UKMTO or owners name the struck tankers; any Qatari "measures."
Herzog's 4 Nov receipt of election results.
Whether Saudi strikes on Ras Issa and Bajil continue.
