US confirms Qeshm strike as part of weeks of quiet Hormuz strikes
US officials confirmed American aircraft struck Iran's Qeshm Island on the night of 2 Nov and disclosed it was one of "several weeks" of quiet, limited strikes framed as protecting shipping and aircraft in Hormuz. The confirmation, first reported by the WSJ and acknowledged by Iranian state media, recasts the ceasefire as a managed low-level exchange. Qatar now awaits both sides' replies within about 36 hours, and a post-midterm US decision point is live.

What happened at Qeshm?
Barak Ravid of Axios reported that the IRGC fired a missile from Qeshm at US aircraft over the strait and a US fighter destroyed the launcher "in self-defense." NewsNation says radars and launchers were hit. The strike is cross-bloc corroborated: the WSJ reported it first, followed by Axios, NYT, CNN and AP.
According to the WSJ, Qeshm hosts a large underground missile complex and naval base. US officials had earlier discussed seizing the island, and more missile-defence assets have moved to the region.
Trump described an air-defence facility "two months" in the building, hit once it was completed. The IDF says it did not take part. Simultaneous explosions near Bandar Lengeh, confirmed by Iranian state media, remain unexplained.
How dangerous is Hormuz shipping now?
India's shipping minister says an "unidentified aerial object" hit an Indian dhow off Oman on 2 Nov, killing one of its 14 crew; Oman rescued 13 (cross-bloc). This sits awkwardly with lawmaker Hayatmoqaddam's claim that India, China, Iraq and Qatar are exempt from transit restrictions.
UKMTO reported two projectiles hit a tanker's engine room about 14 nm off Lima, Oman, at roughly 20:45Z, with no casualties. It is the second vessel holed near Lima in three days.
The IRGC Navy claims three AIS-dark "violating" tankers hit mines and are burning. Separately, the IRGC claims it downed a 55th MQ-9 and two US "LUCAS" loitering munitions. These are Iranian military claims only, with no names, flags, UKMTO match or US confirmation.
Where do talks stand?
SNSC Secretary Mohsen Rezaei called the US reply to Iran's seven conditions "not convincing" and said the strait reopens only after explicit answers. A senior Iranian official told Reuters the sides are "far" from a deal, with nuclear talks only after Hormuz.
Reuters reports that Qatari mediators expect responses within 36 hours, roughly late 4 Nov to early 5 Nov. Baghaei made a ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanon, a "fundamental" precondition.
Al Jadeed's claim that Washington approved the Qatari MoU draft was contradicted by IRIB and Rezaei within hours and remains unsupported.
Is Washington preparing to resume war?
Trump told the FT he has "no immediate plan" to strike Iran, but he also said Pickaxe Mountain could be hit "in one hour."
The NYT (single-outlet) reports CENTCOM plans to resume major operations from 4 Nov pending Trump's approval, citing three carriers and a short moonless window.
Axios describes a three-way split. Vance and Witkoff favour diplomacy; Netanyahu and Hegseth favour resuming war; Bessent, Ratcliffe and Rubio favour maximum pressure without war or a deal.
What did Trump do on Israel aid?
On Fox, Trump said: "We won't be paying anymore Israel." He cited a $4bn-a-year deal struck "months ago" and said Israel can still buy weapons. The quote is cross-bloc confirmed.
N12 reports the Finance Ministry and IDF were blindsided; roughly $3.8bn was budgeted for 2027 and 2028. Netanyahu's single-source account describes a gradual 10-year phase-out. No US implementing document exists.
How are markets and voters reacting?
According to Reuters, Brent rose 48 cents to $105.25 and WTI rose 47 cents to $96.93 on the Qeshm news. AAA says Election Day gasoline averaged $4.12 (+38% y/y) and diesel $6.28 (+~70%), both election-day records.
CNN and CBS exit polls put Trump's approval at 38%. NBC finds 62% call the Iran war decision wrong. Results were incomplete at cutoff.
What to watch next (24-72 hours)
Whether US and Iranian replies land within Qatar's 36-hour window, and whether Rezaei's "not convincing" hardens into formal rejection.
Whether the NYT-reported CENTCOM window wins Trump's approval or his FT "no immediate plan" holds as midterm results land.
Further UKMTO-confirmed hits off Lima, plus any new US "self-defense" strike disclosures.
A written US aid decision, or Israeli confirmation of the 10-year phase-out.
Herzog's consultations, Wednesday's election results publication, and the Zini-Attorney General fallout.
